Choosing the Right Bowling Ball

Posted

So you’ve fallen in love with the sport of bowling; of course. Well the next step is to purchase your own ball! House balls are okay, but one fitted specifically for you will help you perform better as well as reduce the risk of injuries. Three things to remember when choosing the right bowling ball is to choose the weight, get fitted at a pro shop, and pick the cover of the ball.

Picking your ball

1.Choose the weight

The average weight of a bowling ball for adults is about 10 to 15 lbs. It’s important to remember that a heavier ball does not mean it is better, nor will it give you more strikes. The ball you choose should be heavy enough for you to roll it down the lane without over exerting yourself. It is a good idea to practice with an object in that weight range to give you a better idea. Try out your approach and swing to feel if it’s too much or too little weight.

2.Your ball should be personalized

We recommend you to go to a pro shop to get the best measure and fit. You need to decide which fingers you will use, and if you need a left or right handed bowling ball. The angles of the holes, called a pitch, will be contoured to your hand which increases performance. Finger holes should be comfortable, slip in easily but not loose so that you need to squeeze to hold onto the ball.

3.Consider lane conditions

Different bowling alleys offer different lane conditions. Bowling alleys will vary on how much oil they will but on their lanes. For the ball to hook, you need friction. The cover of the ball limits the amount of friction your ball will have on the lane. More oil means faster lanes, and you need to have the appropriate ball for that situation. A heavy or solid cover will increase the friction for lanes with more oil, but a pearl cover is a better choice for lanes with less oil

The best weight and fit lead to proper grip pressure, which will give you and overall better swing and performance. As important as it is to choose the right bowling ball, it won’t automatically make you a better bowler. Practice is very important, as well as perfecting the release of the bowling ball.
